WHAT IS ARTHROPLASTY?

“What is arthroplasty?” The question is often asked by those who have joint pain and want to be treated. Arthroplasty, also known as joint replacement; It is the surgical reconstruction or shaping of the joint that has lost its function due to some causes. Joint prosthesis is generally used in joints that carry the weight of the body and have large surfaces, such as hip and knee joints. However, developments in technology and medicine have made this surgical procedure applicable to joints such as the wrist, ankle, shoulder and elbow.

Arthroplasty, which is a speciality of the Orthopedics and Traumatology department, is among the most commonly used methods for the treatment of joint pain.

Frequently applied arthroplasty surgeries are as follows:

  • Total hip replacement surgery
  • Total knee replacement surgery
  • Shoulder prosthesis surgery

Arthroplasty, which provides reshaping of the joint that has lost its function, has different types according to the application method. The main types of joint prosthesis are as follows:

  • Resection arthroplasty
  • Interposition arthroplasty
  • Partial endoprosthesis arthroplasty
  • Total joint arthroplasty

Total hip replacement, also called total hip arthroplasty, involves replacing the severely deformed hip joint with an artificial joint. With this procedure, limitation of movement and pain are eliminated and the quality of life of the person is improved. The application of this procedure differs according to the age, gender, and complaints of the patient. Total hip prostheses can be used for 15-20 years.

It is applied to people who experience severe pain and inactivity due to wear and tear damage, calcifications or excessive cartilage formation in the shoulder joint, to relieve pain and to enable the joint to move normally. A person's shoulder joint is one of the most mobile joints in the body. This joint is also called the ball and socket type joint. The purpose of this process; to enable the patient to regain normal shoulder functions and to alleviate their pain.

This treatment method is one of the most reliable methods to be preferred in cases where the pain intensifies, prevents the patient from sleeping at night, and restricts movement. Pain in the person appears with movement and turns into pain that interrupts sleep in the following period. As the cartilage damage of the person progresses, the joint swells and loses its function. In more advanced cases, the motion function in the shoulder joints may be completely lost.

A part or all of the shoulder that has problems is removed with total shoulder replacement surgery and an artificial joint is placed. After this procedure, if the patient's joint function is in good condition, it will be easier for the joint to regain its function.

Another procedure that can be applied to the shoulder is reverse shoulder prosthesis. In patients undergoing this procedure, there is also muscle tearing. Torn muscles cause both pain and a significant limitation in shoulder movements. However, with the design of the reverse shoulder prosthesis, the function of the muscles is fulfilled by the prosthesis and the problems experienced by the patient are expected to decrease.

Reverse shoulder replacement procedure; It is used in shoulder involvement due to rheumatological diseases, after tumor resection, shoulder arthroplasty revisions.

“What is total knee arthroplasty?” The question is also among the questions asked. Knee arthroplasty is applied to relieve pain and limitation of movement caused by calcification or cartilage wear in the knee. With this procedure, the damaged or worn knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint. This application is often preferred by orthopedists, especially if other treatment options are insufficient.
